Forum Thread: Can You Get Accutane in Canada?
Posted by CuriousCanuck
Hi everyone! Quick question for those who know. Ive been told that Accutane (isotretinoin) can help with severe acne but Im not sure if its available here in Canada. Anyone have any experience or information about this? Thanks!

Hello CuriousCanuck, great question! Yes, isotretinoin is indeed available in Canada under different brand names such as Claravis and Absorica. It's a powerful medication used for severe nodular acne that doesn't respond to other treatments like antibiotics or topical creams. However, it does come with potential side effects, so it's usually the last line of treatment after everything else has failed.

Thanks DermDr420! Thats helpful to know. Ive heard a lot about Accutane (or isotretinoin as you mentioned) and how effective it can be, but also that it's quite strict in terms of prescription requirements. Are there any specific criteria or tests needed before getting prescribed?

Absolutely, AcneWarrior! Before prescribing isotretinoin, doctors typically require a thorough consultation to ensure the patient understands all aspects of the medication and its possible side effects. This includes blood work (like liver function tests), regular follow-ups with your dermatologist or healthcare provider, and sometimes even psychological evaluations depending on the severity of the acne. Also, it's mandatory for women who can become pregnant to use two forms of contraception or confirm they are not pregnant before starting the medication.

Thanks for clarifying DermDr420! I was also wondering about the availability of generics. Are there any generic versions available in Canada?

Hi CuriousCanuck, yes, there are generic forms of isotretinoin available in Canada as well. They might be cheaper than branded products like Claravis or Absorica and still effective. However, it's important to discuss with your healthcare provider which version would suit you best considering the cost and other factors.

Thats correct, MedicineMaven! Generic isotretinoin can indeed be a more affordable option for those who need this medication. Just remember that even with generics, the same stringent monitoring by your healthcare provider is required due to its potency and potential side effects.

Thanks DermDr420 and MedicineMaven! It's good to know there are options both branded and generic. I guess it comes down to discussing all these aspects with my dermatologist before making a decision.

Exactly, AcneWarrior! Always best to have an open conversation with your healthcare provider about the pros, cons, costs, and any other concerns you might have. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation. If you're in Canada, you'll likely find the medication available at most pharmacies after a proper prescription from a dermatologist.
