Forum Topic: Prednisone for Cats - No Prescription?
Posted by: CatLover92
Hey everyone, I have a quick question regarding my kitty. She's been showing some signs of inflammation and our vet prescribed her prednisone. However, due to some unforeseen circumstances, we can't visit the vet right now. Is it okay to get this medication without a prescription for our cat? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi CatLover92, thanks for reaching out! First off, I want to emphasize that its crucial to follow veterinary guidance when dealing with any medications, especially something as potent as prednisone. Prednisone is a corticosteroid and can have serious side effects if not administered correctly. It's always best to consult your vet before making any decisions regarding medication.

Thank you for the response! I understand its important, but given our current situation, visiting the vet isnt possible at this moment. Are there any online pharmacies or over-the-counter options we could consider?

I completely understand your concern about not being able to visit the vet right now. However, obtaining prednisone for your cat without a prescription can be risky and potentially harmful. Prednisone is classified as a prescription medication in many countries because of its potential side effects if misused. Without proper veterinary guidance, you might end up giving too little or too much, which could worsen the condition.

I see your point about the risks involved, but our situation is really difficult right now. Are there any natural remedies that can help manage inflammation in cats until we can get to a vet?

Absolutely, it's good you're considering safer alternatives. Some natural options for managing inflammation include:- Fish Oil Supplements: These are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and have anti-inflammatory properties.- Turmeric: A small amount of turmeric mixed with a carrier oil like coconut can be used to reduce inflammation. Be cautious as too much can cause gastrointestinal issues.- Green Lipped Mussel Extracts: Often sold as supplements, these are known for their anti-inflammatory benefits in cats.
However, always consult your vet before starting any new treatment regimen for your cat. Its important to ensure that the natural remedies wont interfere with other medications or health conditions your kitty might have.
